"The coolest film organization in the world." —John Waters
Est. 1961.
The films included in this compilation were made in response to an open invitation from 'The WEEK OF THE ANGRY ARTS.' The films were brought together in less than a month, and this was the time that elapsed from inception of idea to the first showing. The invitation set only the following conditions --- each film be under three minutes in length, and that the theme of the film in some way relate to the notion of either 'LIFE' or 'AGAINST WAR.' There were more than 60 contributions to the invitation. These films were screened once in an 'original version' that ran about 3 hours on January 30, 1967 in New York City. Since that presentation, some filmmakers withdrew their works and others have added their efforts. There are 49 films in this version. (Jules Rabin)

Established in 1961 by a group of 22 path-breaking moving image artists (including Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Shirley Clarke, and Stan Brakhage), the Coop has more than 5,000 films, videotapes, and DVDs in its collection.
