No camera, no toxic chemicals, and no dark room needed! Learn to make images on 16mm film with just light and plants!
In this workshop we will learn phytogram, chemigram, and photogram techniques with plant-based non toxic developers, and create images without the need for a camera or a darkroom!
Katherine Bauer manipulates different mediums, particularly celluloid film and the cinematic apparatus encompassing the practices of moving and still image, installation, and live performance. She invokes mythologies through the means of obsolete technologies, composting them with mineral and vegital communications to bleed the boundaries of the tangible and intangible. Bauer graduated from "The People's Film Department" of Bard College and received a MFA from New York University. She was the president of the Board of Directors of the Film-Makers' Cooperative from 2010-2020, as well as an original member of the expanded cinema group Optipus (New York 2009-2020 with Bradley Eros). Bauer was also an occasional projectionist for the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2022-present). Bauer received a NYSCA Individual Artist Grant in 2023. She is an active member of Atelier MTK collective laboratory in Grenoble, France and the film collective La Ratoire (2020- present). Her work has screened or been exhibited at venues and festivals around the world. She travels regularly to teach workshops in 16mm film and photography. She is represented by Microscope Gallery (NYC) and her films are in distribution with The Film-Makers' Cooperative. She also studied herbalism for over a decade in the Hudson Valley of New York and worked on various medicinal gardens throughout her life. Currently, she creates one you are invited you to, in Les Alpes.
The Film-Makers’ Cooperative (a.k.a. New American Cinema Group) is the largest archive and distributor of independent and avant-garde films in the world. Established in 1961 by a group of 22 path-breaking moving image artists (including Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Shirley Clarke, and Stan Brakhage), the Coop has more than 5,000 films, videotapes, and DVDs in its collection.
